A glyph is a symbol that has meaning. Ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphics as a form of communication. Art is a form of communication that can help us find meaning and beauty in everyday things.
For me, it's like an itch that needs to be scratched. An idea comes to me in many ways - possibly by looking at nature, other paintings, a color, from a dream, even from a word or sentence I might read or hear. And I just cannot get it out of my head (sort-of like a piece of music that drives you crazy playing over and over in your mind) unless I paint it. There is a feeling of relief and, also, a deep satisfaction, after that painting is out of me - even if the painting turns out to be different than what I "expected".
